Ard Ri Shawl

Ard Rí – or “High King” in Irish – is a celebration in colour and texture.

It’s 208 cm wide (that’s 82 inches), and it is so, so easy to adapt it to make it bigger or smaller.

Yarn used in sample: Townhouse Yarns Tara 4-ply
(60% Merino; 20% Silk; 20% Yak – 14 wpi)
Main Yarn: “Rosie’s Gold” – 3 skeins (1000 m)
Contrast Yarn: “Pure Majesty” – 1 skein (350 m)

Wingspan: 208 cm / 82 inches
Hook: 7 mm
Note: This pattern was designed to be made with a regular, short crochet hook. No Tunisian-style/cabled hook is necessary.

Ard Rí is worked up using rows of short Tunisian crochet “simple stitches” that are layered one on top of the other to build up the fabric. Short rows are used to create the half-circle and some of the colourwork elements.
The colourwork itself is created by carrying both strands along as each row is crocheted.

This pattern comes with easy-to-follow charts, text instruction and a series of helpful technique videos.
